Scarlett Johansson Lost $134M DC Role to Marvel Co-Star Natalie Portman Who Found the Traumatizing Role Funny

Despite being one of the biggest names in the realms of Hollywood, Scarlett Johansson hasn’t been immune to rejections from several substantial roles, especially during the early days of her career. Although the Lucy actress eventually found her footing in the industry and made it big in the world of superheroes and became a veteran Marvel star. However, it seems that even before MCU, the actress came close to making a prominent mark in the comic book landscape.

But despite coming close to starring in 2005’s V for Vendetta, her MCU co-star would later crush her chances and would surpass her to star in the movie as Evey instead.

Scarlett Johansson was initially the frontrunner to star in V for Vendetta

Widely famous for her role as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow in the MCU and is one of the main members of the original Avengers. However, it wasn’t the first Comic Book role that Scarlett Johansson was considered for and initially was the frontrunner to star in DC Vertigo’s (now under DC Black Label) live-action adaptation of Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta.

But despite being the initial favorite for the role, her Marvel Co-star, Natalie Portman would grab the role of Evey in the movie instead. And even though the movie might not have been the biggest success at the time, however, it seems that the lead actress is open to the idea of returning for a sequel if asked.

Natalie Portman once expressed her desire to star in a V for Vendetta sequel

At a time when Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies presented the superhero genre in a more fun manner and before Christopher Nolan redefined the Superhero landscape through the TDK trilogy. V for Vendetta was one of the few comic book movies at the time that tried to push the boundaries of the genre. But despite initially not being enough successful at the box office, over the years the movie has garnered immense appreciation and made a name for itself among fans.

Even though there hasn’t been any substantial news about a sequel to the original movie in years, Nicole Kidman once expressed that she is open to the idea of a V for Vendetta sequel. Back in 2018, when the Brothers actress was asked about which of her movies she’d like to make a sequel to, the actress responded by stating, “Maybe V for Vendetta.”

Although it is now hard to imagine anyone in the role of Evey except Natalie Portman, who reportedly didn’t even mind getting her head getting shaved for the movie. It’s safe to say that Scarlett Johansson too could have delivered an immaculate performance in the role, considering the actress has repeatedly proved herself as one of the best in the business.
