Thor 4's Russell Crowe Calls Taika Waititi a 'Creative Genius'

Hollywood icon and Thor: Love and Thunder star Russell Crowe says director Taika Waititi is a "creative genius."

During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Crowe remarked on his experience working with Waititi when asked if he had heard anything about his character Zeus returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "Well, nobody's brought anything up with me, but, I mean, it seems like that's the idea at the end of the last one, right? But, I don't really know," Crowe responded. "Yeah, look... if you're a young actor and you get the opportunity to be on a set with Taika Waititi, take it. It's a lot of fun, he's a creative genius, but he's also just a lovely bloke."

Crowe worked with Waititi on 2022's Love and Thunder, which marked the former's first appearance as Zeus in the MCU. In July 2022, Waititi noted that the pair ended up having to shoot each scene the actor appeared in twice on account of Crowe's accent work with the character. "We actually talked at length about the accent," Waititi said at the time. "We wondered if someone did a Greek accent of a Greek god, is it going to be a farce? Will it be too silly? And Russell was very much wanting it to be Greek. But I wasn't sure, so we ended up doing two versions of every take with Russell."

What's Next for Russell Crowe and Taika Waititi?

Although Crowe has no plans to return to the MCU at this time, he is set to portray another Marvel character in the upcoming Kraven the Hunter feature film. Crowe will play the role of Nikolai Kravinoff, the father of Sergei Kravinoff, aka Kraven the Hunter, who will be played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Crowe previously revealed to fans, "I've talked to J.C. Chandor, the director, he's really excited about what he's got in front of him... Really excited about the way people will receive it." Crowe added, "I think I can sort of pass on... One of the things he said, that it's, it's just an unexpectedly dark world."

Like Crowe, Waititi has no known MCU projects in the works at this time, although he has received praise from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy for his work on an upcoming feature film for the Star Wars franchise. "Taika is still working away," Kennedy said. "He's writing the script himself. He doesn't really want to bring others into that process and I don’t blame him. He has a very, very unique voice. So we want to protect that and that's what he's doing. But we're going to make that one day."
