Wakanda Forever producer Nate Moore hints that Marvel may have pulled the plug on a Black Panther spinoff series centered around Okoye.
Black Panther producer Nate Moore has potentially revealed that an Okoye spinoff series is no longer in active development at Marvel Studios. Speaking with Variety, Moore seemed to suggest that Black Panther-centered spinoffs had only been discussed at this time and that none had actually moved into the development phase at Marvel. "We’ve certainly talked about characters and ideas that could be Disney+ series," the producer said. "But it really is about the right story and making sure we’re not taking away from the cinematic experience of the franchise. I think our first love and Kevin Feige's first love is the cinematic experience. The movie will always take precedence, but we have had ideas of what could be a Disney series."
What About the Okoye Spinoff?
While promoting Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in November 2022, Moore stated that a spinoff series centered around Danai Gurira's Okoye was "probably not as far along as people want it to be," which he attributed to "the amount of time and attention" that went into Wakanda Forever and the upcoming Ironheart series. However, he stated that "there are certainly great ideas that we're still talking to Ryan [Coogler] about. So, we'll see how far we can get with it." Moore's latest comments confirm just how early the Okoye spinoff is in the development process, suggesting that it will still be a while before fans see Gurira headline her own Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
The Black Panther spinoff series was first announced in February 2021, with Gurira reportedly signing on to star in the project the following May. Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is developing the project as part of a five-year overall exclusive television deal his company Proximity Media has with Disney. Gurira recently reprised the role of Okoye in Wakanda Forever, which marked her fifth time playing the character. In the 2022 film, Okoye is stripped as General of the Dora Milaje, leading her on a redemptive journey that culminates in her donning the Midnight Angel armor.
Is Black Panther 3 Happening?
The first two Black Panther films have been critical and commercial successes for Marvel Studios, leading many fans to wonder when the company will announce a threequel. While Letitia Wright -- who stars as Shuri/Black Panther in the MCU, previously said at the start of 2023 that Marvel was "already in the works" on Black Panther 3, she later walked back those claims. "What I tried to say, maybe I didn't do it clearly enough, to clarify, there is always the hope that you would have another film, especially in a franchise," she stated in February 2023.
