How Daryl Gets To France In The Walking Dead - Every Theory

How will Daryl get all the way from Virginia to France in his Walking Dead spinoff? Several theories explain how such a trip could be possible.

Multiple theories explain how Daryl gets to France ahead of his Walking Dead spinoff. Sometime after taking part in the fight against the Commonwealth and riding off on his own in the series finale, Daryl will embark on a new journey in The Walking Dead universe. Somehow, his travels will take him all the way from Virginia to France.

Norman Reedus’ character will be a long way from home when Daryl Dixon begins. Based on what’s known about the show, the series won’t be offering an immediate answer to the show’s most pressing question. According to a synopsis, Daryl will wash ashore somewhere in France, completely unaware of how he ended up there. It would seem that the circumstances of his arrival will be a subject of mystery in Daryl Dixon that the show will explore gradually. As for what the logical explanation the spinoff might offer for his current predicament, there are of course different ways the show could justify this long-distance voyage. Here’s every theory on how Daryl gets to France.

Daryl Goes Looking For The Zombie Virus' Origin

By connecting the dots between Maggie’s last words with Daryl and The Walking Dead: World Beyond’s ending, it’s not at all implausible that his presence there relates to the origin of the zombie virus. In The Walking Dead series finale, Maggie sent Daryl off to learn more about the zombie apocalypse. This ties in neatly with Daryl’s spinoff setting, considering that World Beyond already confirmed France’s importance to the overarching narrative of The Walking Dead universe. The final scene revealed that the zombie virus originated in France. Since that’s where Daryl will be very soon, it makes sense that these two details are connected.

By traveling around and making inquiries, it could be that knowledgeable people in The Walking Dead’s world pointed Daryl in that direction. If so, Daryl may have traveled to the coast and arranged for passage to France, possibly via a ship. But some incident along the way, such as a shipwreck, could have resulted in Daryl forgetting the events that brought him to this point.

Daryl Is Taken To France By The CRM

Since a journey overseas may be a difficult one to make in a post-apocalyptic world, it’s possible that an outside force will have to pull some strings in order to get Daryl there. The organization in The Walking Dead universe in the best position to pull that off is the CRM, who has its fingers in several pies all over the country. Given their interests in expansion, Walking Dead's CRM going global is certainly a feasible scenario. They could either have a base in France or have a plan to build one. If they don’t, it may be that whatever investigations they want to conduct in France will need to be covert.

If CRM wants to avoid detection by the people in the region, they could send an outsider like Daryl to do the job for them. Since a synopsis for the series has hinted at a “resilient France,” France may be holding up much better than the United States (a possibility supported by comments from Dr. Jenner in season 1). If that’s true, the CRM doing as they please in France in the same way that they do in the States just may not be possible, thus giving them a reason to use someone like Daryl as a CRM operative. He’s more than capable of handling himself in a fight, and someone whose skills could be used to advance their goals.

Daryl Is Taken By A New Villain Group

Alternatively, an entirely new villain group in The Walking Dead universe may be behind what’s happening to Reedus’ character in Daryl Dixon. After all, it does stand to reason that the CRM isn’t the only organization with real power in the zombie apocalypse. The introductions of the Commonwealth in The Walking Dead and PADRE in FTWD are evidence of that. An additional group – one that could be unveiled in Daryl Dixon – could abduct Daryl and take him with them to France between The Walking Dead’s ending and the beginning of his spinoff series.

As for what their motivation would be, there’s a chance that Daryl’s search for answers brings him to their doorstep. This group, which may possess the means to travel internationally, could be looking for a cure or perhaps were involved in the creation of the zombie virus in the first place. Either way, their plans may involve a secret mission to this location. If that were to happen, they could capture him before they journey to France and wind up taking him along for the ride. An escape attempt gone awry could have culminated in Daryl getting away right when they were about to reach their destination. Daryl not being aware of what they were up to would explain why he doesn’t have the full story of how (or why) he arrived in France.

Daryl Goes Looking For Rick Grimes

Another possibility worth exploring concerns Rick's fate. Judging by what’s known about his own Walking Dead spinoff, Rick Grimes will likely be in Philadelphia and may still be in the area during the timeframe of Daryl’s show. That detail downplays the theory that Daryl will be looking for Rick but doesn’t outright debunk it, as evidence for the idea still exists. It shouldn’t be forgotten that no one in The Walking Dead – not even Michonne – spent more time on the show looking for Andrew Lincoln’s character than Daryl, who focused his efforts on the search after the bridge explosion. And as Daryl’s promise to bring Rick back in the finale strongly implied, finding him will once again be Daryl’s goal.

This drastically increases the likelihood of Rick being at the center of Daryl’s upcoming story – even if Rick isn’t actually in France. It could be that Daryl’s investigation into Rick’s whereabouts will lead him to his captors, but not necessarily Rick himself. If he crosses paths with the CRM, they could make a mutually beneficial arrangement with him. If he investigates the goings-on in France and returns with answers that can help them with finding a cure, the CRM may agree to provide him with Rick’s location. By taking this course, The Walking Dead would have an easy way of setting up a Rick-Daryl reunion in the aftermath of both spinoff shows. A new series or crossover could see the two team up after Daryl gets back from France.
