Grant Gustin Reveals The Flash Ending He Wanted - It's Much Darker Than The Showrunner Allowed

Grant Gustin reveals that he initially wanted The Flash season 9 to have a much darker ending. The Arrowverse as The CW knows it is closer than ever to reaching its end. After running since 2012, the franchise will end a massive era when The Flash season 9 finishes in May. The Flash is the last remaining Earth-Prime-based series in the Arrowverse as of 2023. Since Superman & Lois takes place on another Earth, The Flash will conclude this side of the Arrowverse.

In a recent interview with TVLine, Gustin spoke about the show ending with season 9 and The Flash's series finale. When asked if he was satisfied with how Barry Allen's arc concludes, Gustin had an intriguing response. The Arrowverse star spoke about how he always imagined The Flash to die a hero's death. Referring to a long-time fan theory, Gustin ultimately understood why The Flash ends the way it does.

I am - when I thought about it ending, I think there was a theory out there that Barry would sacrifice himself to keep the Speed Force alive and become the lightning bolt that inevitably struck him and create this full circle, which I thought was really cool. I always kind of wanted him to die a hero's death in a way, and Eric [Wallace, the showrunner] was very opposed to the idea. We really wanted to see a happy ending for Barry and Iris. Ultimately I think, that [when] looking back at this and when fans revisit it, probably how they're going to want it to end. It is nice to finish on a happy note. There’s a bit of the unknown. The story continues, our show ends, but it’s left in a place where the story continues. So who knows what happens beyond 9x13 of The Flash.

Everything We Know About The Flash’s Ending

While The CW hasn't shared too many details about The Flash series finale, a few plot points are known. Through set photos and videos, The Flash season 9 is seemingly staging a major speedster war. During the filming of The Flash's last episode, several familiar villains were spotted on set. The exact context has yet to be revealed at this point.

At some point in the final episode, Team Flash goes up against not one, but five speedster foes. Reverse-Flash, Zoom, Godspeed, Savitar, and Rick Cosnett's new character were present. Cosnett is believed to be playing the DC villain Cobalt Blue, based on his costume design. He is likely meant to be The Flash season 9's new avatar of the Negative Speed Force. After everything The Flash has been through as a character, it makes sense for season 9 to end on a happy note. A hero's death would also be too similar to how Oliver Queen died during Arrow season 8. With only six episodes left to go, more details about The Flash season 9's bittersweet end will soon come out.
