After a run on the show lasting over a decade, Thomas Gibson was released by Criminal Minds due to an incident that took place behind the scenes. Gibson revealed the details of what had taken place between himself and writer-producer, Virgil Williams.“We were shooting a scene late one night when I went to Virgil and told him there was a line that I thought contradicted an earlier line,” Gibson said.“He said, ‘Sorry, it’s necessary, and I absolutely have to have it.’”
Things took a turn for the worst when Gibson told his co-workers as to what had taken place. At that point, Williams burst into the room and was apparently 'kicked' by the actor.“He came into that room and started coming towards me. As he brushed past me, my foot came up and tapped him on the leg,” Gibson recalls. “If I hadn’t moved, he would have run into me. We had some choice words, for which I apologized the next day, and that was it. It was over. We shot the scene, I went home and I never got to go back.”
Gibson ended up finishing his shoot and would even apologize to the show's writer the following day. However, that would be his last episode, as Gibson was let go. Although the actor thinks the once incident ruined his stint on the show, it might've been a build up because of past instances.It Is Believed That Past Incidents Also Factored In When It Came Thomas Gibson's Departure. Gibson may have had other disputes that factored in to his dismissal. According to Variety, an incident in 2010 may have factored in as well.
The publication writes, "The actor was said to have frequently been verbally abusive to fellow cast and crew members. One source with knowledge of the 2010 incident which allegedly involved Gibson shoving the assistant director said many staff members were dismayed that he was not let go at that time."The source also rights that the actor ran into troubles with the law outside of the show.
"In January 2013, Gibson was arrested in downtown Los Angeles on suspicion of drunk driving after driving his car through a barricade on a street cordoned off for a marathon event. He pleaded no contest to alcohol-related reckless driving. He received probation and was ordered to attend alcohol education classes."
