Riverdale: Who Is The Auteur?

The identity of The Auteur is one of the darkest, most intense plotlines on Riverdale, and the villain's identity is a major twist in the teen drama.

Of the many mysteries present on Riverdale, the question of the Auteur's identity is one of the most gripping, and this arc makes up seasons 4 and 5 of the CW teen drama. The Auteur is referred to as the Voyeur at first and takes videotapes of the main characters' homes, which is nerve-wracking since no one is sure who is watching them.

When the Auteur begins sharing videotapes that reenact some of the most brutal crimes in town, including Clifford Blossom (Barclay Hope) killing his son Jason (Trevor Stines), the fear escalates, particularly since whoever is in these strange movies wears grotesque masks of the main characters' faces.Given the many victims of Riverdale's Black Hood killer, there are several characters who are included in these unnerving tapes, and just like the series sets up a big reveal of Hal Cooper (Lochlyn Munro) being this murderer,

Riverdale makes sure that the Auteur's identity is shared in a fascinating and fast-paced episode. There is a significant and emotional reason why a certain character is behind these tapes, and this plot twist perfectly sets up the next part of the story.

Jellybean Jones Is The Auteur

In season 5, episode 2, "Chapter Seventy-Eight: The Preppy Murders," Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) find out that Jughead's little sister Jellybean Jones (Trinity Likins) is the Auteur in a David Lynch-inspired Riverdale storyline. In season 4, episode 19, "Chapter Seventy-Six: Killing Mr. Honey," they watch a videotape of six people wearing masks of the main characters pretending to murder their principal Mr. Honey (Kerr Smith). Since Jughead had written a short story about this same subject, he proves his perceptive personality and knows that only Jellybean was aware of its contents.

The events leading up to the Auteur reveal are a solid, well-crafted mystery, and enough clues and hints are planted that the answer is satisfying. The series offers up a clever red herring in Ethel Muggs (Shannon Purser), as she has a copy of Jughead and Betty's sex tape and took out Friday the 13th 16 times from Blue Velvet Video. While Riverdale is known for unrealistic storylines, it's not difficult to believe that a bored teenager such as Jellybean would devote a lot of time to these videotapes, and it's smart that Jellybean is the Auteur, as no one would suspect such a young character.

The particularly dark Voyeur/Auteur storyline is one of Riverdale's best as it emphasizes the dangers of living in the titular small town. Even when Betty, Jughead, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), and Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) are experiencing the highs of young love or enjoying brief moments of happiness, it's always evident that life in Riverdale wouldn't stay calm and stable for long. Jason Blossom's season 1 murder mystery plotline was the best in the show, so it was a smart choice to call this back through the Auteur.
