Now that it is confirmed that Mortal Kombat 12 is coming in 2023, there’s room for speculation on which characters will be included in its roster.
NetherRealm Studios is currently working on the new Mortal Kombat 12 video game, set to be released later in 2023, and although there have not been any official trailers yet, that has not prevented fans from excitedly speculating on characters. While hopefully more information will be made available soon, until then fans have only cryptic tweets from the series' co-creator Ed Boon to give them information on what and who will be in the game. The ending of Mortal Kombat 11 left things on a bit of a cliffhanger and many fans are now wondering which of the endings will be made canon moving forward.
There is no set release date for Mortal Kombat 12 yet, beyond Warner Bros. stating in a quarterly earnings call that it will be launching this year. Possible characters for the game as well as story theories have begun to circulate wildly as speculations are made. Until an official announcement and trailer are provided, exactly which characters are going to be in MK12 is unknown, but there are many which should be included based on fan support and the direction the story seemed to be heading in the endings of MK11.
Mortal Kombat 12 Characters That Should Be Included Based On MK11
There are a couple of characters who are likely to be in Mortal Kombat 12 based on how MK11: Aftermath ended. Presuming that the "good" ending is what will be canonical moving forward in the series, then Liu Kang and Kung Lau are essentially guaranteed. This is dependent on a lot of choices that NetherRealm studios could make, however, and if the "bad" ending or some merged alternate ending from Mortal Kombat: Aftermath is used instead, then the direction that the series takes could be a complete surprise to fans.
Reptile is one of the classic Mortal Kombat characters who has been around in nearly all the games ever since he appeared as a hidden opponent in the very first game. As such, he is one of the most recognized fighters and his backstory and lore have slowly grown and emerged throughout the stories of the games. Reptile has long been a fan-favorite of the series and his moves and abilities in the games are typically fun to use although often difficult to master.
Mortal Kombat 11 was a rare situation where Reptile was left out of the roster of characters and many fans wondered why. Shang Tsung has the ability to shapeshift into him, but he is not a playable character. The question was brought up while discussing MK12's roster with Ed Boon where he cryptically teased that Reptile would be coming back in this latest edition of the game.
Cassie Cage Was Hinted By Ed Boon To Be Making A Return
Another character who Ed Boon made hints about returning to Mortal Kombat 12 is Cassie Cage. The daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, Cassie is a commander in the Special Forces but is also a nod to the younger generation of players through her use of modern technology and social media. Her fighting style in the game is one of the most enjoyable through her mix of superhuman abilities and special forces training, particularly when combined with her witty quotes.
Scorpion Is The Most Iconic Of Mortal Kombat Characters
For most people, when they think of Mortal Kombat the image that comes to mind is that of the undead ninja, Scorpion. He is the most well-known character and a favorite of not only many fans but even of Ed Boon, who has voiced the infamous "Get over here" line for Scorpion throughout the history of the game. Given this history, Scorpion will most likely show up in each of the games and therefore continue to make many fans pleased to see the consistent icon.
Kenshi's Recent Mortal Kombat Film Means He Deserves A Spot In MK12
Kenshi Takahashi is Mortal Kombat's blind character who is skilled with not only swordsmanship but also utilizes telekinesis and psychokinetics in his fighting style. He is an amazing character in his own right who would be a great addition to MK12, but his recent film, Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind, takes his lore and makes it even more worthy of mention in the games. Seeing his character interact in the new game after this movie could be interesting if it's tied in somehow.
Jade And Her Staff Are A Blast To Play In Mortla Kombat
Finally, Jade deserves a spot on this list for many reasons but first and foremost is that thanks partly to her staff, Jade is a fun, classic Mortal Kombat character. She actually carries two weapons, yet her staff is the most enjoyable. While the current timeline has Jade as a revenant, Revenant Jade is weaker than the living version and hopefully, with the possible timeline changes, the living Jade may see a return in MK12.
There have been over 80 characters throughout the Mortal Kombat series and with the way that MK11: Aftermath ended there are several directions that NetherRealm Studios could choose to take the game as it heads into not only Mortal Kombat 12 but future endeavors. Everyone has their own favorite characters when it comes to fighting games such as these, and even those favorites may vary with each new version changing and adding to lore and abilities for characters. Ultimately, it will be fascinating to see when a Mortal Kombat 12 trailer is finally released which characters are going to be making an appearance.
