Doctor Who's New Event Teases The 60th Anniversary's Main Villain

Doctor Who has released details about its new transmedia story, Doom’s Day, which may be teasing the main villain for the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary.

Doctor Who has released details on its new event, Doom’s Day, and the story may be teasing the 60th Anniversary’s main villain. Doctor Who released a teaser on Twitter of a countdown “Doom’s Day” clock which they soon revealed to be a transmedia story about the Universe’s greatest assassin, who is being chased by literal Death. Spanning across comics, audio stories, novels, and video games to name a few, Doom’s Day introduces the new character Doom who has 24 hours and a vortex manipulator to find the Doctor before Death catches up with her.

Doom’s Day will release before the 60th Anniversary and each platform will tell one hour of Doom’s attempt to escape Death, with an overarching narrative that will be told by the finale. Doom’s Day is released later in 2023 and is to celebrate Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary, alongside the TV specials released in November 2023. With Doom searching for the Doctor, it is possible Doom’s story will have some crossover with the main storyline of Doctor Who and could even link to the 60th Anniversary special episodes. The 60th Anniversary is already causing excitement with a mix of new and old faces, so Doom’s Day can definitely add to that.

Doom's Day Teases A Major New Doctor Who Villain

Doom’s Day may already be teasing a major new Doctor Who villain as the first description the press release says about Doom’s Day is, “Someone has sent literal Death after Doom.” Whoever the “Someone” is who sent Death is obviously the bigger villain of the Doom’s Day story and powerful enough to control Death. Doom’s Day has given no indication as to who the someone is but if Doom needs the Doctor to escape Death, then it could mean this someone is the Doctor’s next main villain.

With Doom’s Day being a celebration of Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary, it is highly likely the person who has sent Death will feature in the 60th Anniversary TV show. Doctor Who has already shown Neil Patrick Harris as an unknown villain the Doctor will face in the 60th Anniversary, so Harris’ character could be the mystery villain who sent Death. Alternatively, the “someone” who sent Death could be building up to a villain Gatwa’s Doctor will face and, with the ability to control Death, could be a villain that truly puts the Doctor to the test.

Doom's Day May Support A Popular NPH Villain Theory

If Doom’s Day is in fact introducing Doctor Who’s next big villain, it may support a popular theory that Harris is playing The Celestial Toymaker in the 60th Anniversary special. The Celestial Toymaker is an old foe of the Doctor’s and one of the most powerful ones too. The images of Harris in Doctor Who so far have shown his costume and surroundings to be like that of a Toy shop, leading to the theory Harris is playing The Celestial Toymaker. Plus, RTD has hinted that Harris’ villain is an old enemy of the Doctor’s, enforcing the theory even more.

The Celestial Toymaker debuted in 1966 and was shown to have power similar to a god’s, even ruling his own dimension outside of the Doctor’s universe. If the theory is correct and The Toymaker is now in the Doctor’s universe, then the “someone” who has sent Death to chase Doom across the entire universe could well be Harris’ theorized Celestial Toymaker. The Toymaker’s godlike power could easily allow him to control Death and, if Doom needs the Doctor, it could be a set-up for The Toymaker to find the Doctor in Doom’s Day, ready to disrupt the Doctor’s life in the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary special.
